So . . . where does Satyananda Yoga fall on the Yoga Journal scale of yoga styles?

The Satyananda Yoga system of yoga is a Tantric approach to yoga (b above) and also emphasizes the spiritual aspect of yoga (d).  The as a vehicle for healing is inherent in this style, which takes a holistic mind-body-emotions approach to practices and incorporates modifications to most poses; this makes the practice accessible even to those with health considerations.  The tantra-based system of Satyananda Yoga is from its' core psycho-emotional healing.  This aspects make it therapeutic (c).  And it may be interesting to know that the creator of Phoenix Rising Yoga, rated as (c), spent years practicing Satyananda Yoga and studying at the Satyananda Yoga Academy in Australia.  So influenced was he by his experience that Phoenix Rising style yoga stems from the teaching and practices of Satyananda Yoga.

Satyananda classes include asana, meditation, Satyananda Yoga Nidra™ and pranayama.  Beginning classes are slow paced. Once body and mind are ready and students have become familiar with the Satyananda approach and terminology, practices that require greater strength, flexibility and balance are introduced.  Surya Namaskar is an important practice and Satyananda style yoga has devised modifications that make it accessible to most everyone.

And GyanPriya?  At this place in her life, she's a d/b/c.
